AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT – Is it worth paying more money to get the Ryzen 7 38000XT ? I’ve tested games, applications, power draw, thermals and more to show you the 7 3800XT, and help you decide if the 3800XT is worth the extra.

PROS

  • Better performance
  • Same price as Ryzen 7 3800X
  • Increase gaming performance

CONS

  • Cooler not included
  • Higher temperatures and energy consumption

Blender

The Handbrake test is a very cool indication of how well a processor can perform tasks

like video editing, video conversion, and video rendering,

as these types of applications tend to benefit and use all the cores and threads they can deploy using a specific CPU.

Meanwhile, the shorter Blender test, as run along with our test file, is often useful to shed light on the wide and clear differences between low and final chips, and similarities between chips within these two categories.

Despite the improvements made to the silicon in the 3800XT,

something related to this basic sustainable task has led to the slope, here versus the Ryzen 7 3700X.

Thermal Solution

AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT box

AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT retail box processors include Wraith Spire Cooler.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900XT and AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT do not. Even with a liquid cooler set,

you will reasonably reach 70, up to 75 ° C in these SKUs, so it must use specific cooling.

AMD highly recommends using an AIO solution with a minimum of 280mm radiator or equivalent air cooling to try these products at their best.

AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT Gaming Tests

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was tested using the games benchmark tool.

I’ve got the 1440p results above the 1080p results, and the 3800xt was just a couple of FPS ahead at resolution, putting it around 2% faster than the 3700x.

now that I’ve set your expectations appropriately, Battlefield 5, the game that saw the biggest improvement from the 3800xt out of all 14 titles tested.

the average FPS was at 1440p and it was consistently fast.

Assassin’s Creed tested with the games built in benchmark, and the 3890xt

was around 3% faster than the previous of average frame rate when compared to the 3700x.

Call of Duty modern warfare tested in campaign mode, and same test pass through the game with the processor.

CS:GO tested with the Ulletical FPS benchmark, and despite being a game that typically thrives with higher CPU clock speed, the 3800xt only delivering frame rates around 1% faster than the 3700x.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was tested using the games benchmark tool, and once more there was no real noteworthy difference between the two chips.

The Witcher 3 actually saw. slightly lower performance with the 3800xt, similar to the call of duty, not really sure why that was the case given the 3800xt should be pretty similar just with higher clock speeds.

AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT Performance

starting with cinebench R20, I’ve got the newer but more expensive 3800xt up top, in this test the 3800xt was 4% faster when it came to multicore performance, however the single core score had a higher 6.5% boost.

I’ve also tested the older cinebench R15 as a lot of people still use it, and the margins were quite good, with a large improvement noted in single core performance, which makes sense and is expected as the max boost clock improvements are utilized here.

I’ve tested the Blender BMW and Classroom benchmark. The 3800xt was around three to four times faster than the 3700X.

Handbrake was used and the 3800xt was only completing the task around 3% faster than the 3700x.

I’ve also tested the warp stabilizer effect in Adobe Premiere which is the 3800xt was just 3.5% ahead, I thought it would see a bigger gain due to the higher max boost clock.

7-Zip was used to test compression and decompression speeds, and the 3800xt was only around 2% faster when compared to the 3700x.

Overall

in conclusion If you are about to buy an AMD Ryzen 3000 processor, it’s pretty good and there is no reason not to go to AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT if your mind is on Ryzen 7 or Intel Core i7 processor.

if you don’t really feel the urge to upgrade to Ryzen 3000 already, this won’t be enough to buy this expensive.
