Fast Talk (G5 15 5590)
Dell’s new G5 gaming laptop is finally here, as the previous 5G offered good gaming specs for a fair price.
Dell G5 15 5590 is a gift for gaming enthusiasts, as we always see Dell trying to satisfy gamers who want to play on the go for less than you expected. It succeeds by focusing on specifications and performance.
The Dell G5 15 5590 has many amazing specs and features, for example a 15.6-inch IPS display, hex-core Intel processor and Nvidia RTX graphics, much less in a package of less than one inch.
The device also has an extremely impressive battery life, thanks to the larger 90Wh battery, but it is slightly more expensive than the regular configuration.
starting with the specs my unit has intel i7-8750H CPU, Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics.
16GB of memory running in a single channel, however for testing I upgraded to 16gb in dual channel, a 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD.
and a 15.6 60Hz IPS screen. you can configure it a fair bit when ordering though, for instance to a 144HZ screen, i5 CPU or lower graphics.
for network connectivity it’s got gigabit ethernet, 802. 11ac Wifi and Bluetooth 5.
Also, if we compare the Dell G5 15 5590 with any other device in terms of price, the Dell G5 will prevail, as it is considered affordable.
The Dell G5 15 5590 comes at a price of 1646.90 euros, and if you choose the version with a 60-battery instead of the 90-WHr, it will be for only $ 1,149.

G5 15 5590: Sleek and smooth design
The plastic lid has a smooth matte black finish with a blue Dell logo in the center, and it’s a similar story inside, although the palm rest area has a metal finish with blue accenting on the keys and around the touchpad.
All edges and corners were rounded and smooth, and overall the build quality was good.
The starting weight of the laptop is listed at 2.68kg or 5.9 pound on the Dell website, however this will vary based on hardware customisations.
and my unit came in at under 2.8kg and then just under 3.5kg with the 180 watt power brick and cables for charging included.
the dimensions of the laptop are 36.4cm in width, 27.3cm in depth, and under 2.4cm in height, so on the smaller side for a 15 inch laptop, but a little thicker.
it’s noticeably trimmed down and less chunky looking compared to Dell’s 2018 model of the G5, and this results in thinner screen bezels.
There were no problems opening it with one finger, and with the large battery in the front and the cooling toward the back, I felt the weight distributed evenly.
Despite the thin bezels, Dell still houses a 720p camera above the screen.
Speaking of the camera, we found it’s not great, it’s almost about average, and the case is also similar to the microphone, although it does a good job at removing the noise of a passive fan.

G5 15 5590: Stunning display but with a bit of blur
The Dell G5 15 5590 has a 15.6 1080p 60Hz screen which has a matte look, although G-Sync isn’t available here.
We found it fine, but it nonetheless looked noticeably dull to me even at maximum brightness.
And I measured the current color gamut with Spyder 5 Pro, and my results returned 64% of sRGB, 46% of NTSC and 48% of adobeRGB, and so on on the underside.
But I think that is less of an issue for gaming laptops. For example, at 100% brightness in the center, 245 nits were measured with a contrast ratio of 1000: 1, and the result was that it looked slightly faint outside the box.
I took a long exposure photo in a dark room as one of the backlight bleeding tests. In the worst case, the results were very good, nothing noticeable during normal use, but this will vary between laptops and panels.
But I would expect the 144Hz upgrade option to be better, but now I haven’t tested it so I can’t say for sure.
We also noticed that there is some curvature of the screen, which seems to be caused by the plastic cover integrated with the large hinge in the center of the screen, and this is useful in making the device more stable a little less towards the corners, yet the hinge felt strong.
Keyboard with blue backlight and decent trackpad
As for the keyboard, the Dell G5 15 5590 has the keyboard on blue keys, but unlike the old G5, there is also a blue backlight that you can adjust as you want between two levels of brightness or turn it off using the F10 key.
We also found you had the option to pay a bit more to upgrade to RGB keyboard even though you wanted to. Typing was fine, there was a lack of comments from pressing the keys down, but overall I liked it very much.
But one thing I noticed during my testing that I didn’t like is the little arrow keys that Dell seems to be famous for using, as they were annoying to use in some games.
Upon testing, I did not find a fingerprint reader in my model, but it appears that it is an optional upgrade upon request through the Dell website.
We also found great flexibility that the keyboard possesses while pressing hard, in general, it was fairly rigid, almost the same in the palm rest areas, and not a lot of flexibility.
As for the touchpad, it was accurate and worked well. It taps down anywhere with separate left and right click areas towards the bottom, and there is no strange double-tap problem.
Fingerprints and dust appear easily on the inside cover and the matte black cover, but you can easily wipe them off.
Performance: amazing components, Battery life
As for the performance of the Dell G5 15 5590, we found that the components it contains are very well matched, in terms of Intel’s hex-core CPU, Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics and a 1080p LCD panel to deliver smooth frame rates.
During the tests, it was set to super detail, and we found that frame rate results could run in the 60 to 70 fps region, but we found it futile to choose a high refresh panel with this configuration.
Also, we found support for 144Hz useless if you were only driving the board at about half that refresh rate.
One of the things that I also did not like is the fans are very loud, and this we noticed when we used the device intensively, although it is a problem that can be accepted.
As for the screen, it has a 1080p panel with IPS technology and good colors, but it is a bit faded.
As for the battery life of the Dell G5 15 5590, we tested it when playing movies, and found that it lasted for nearly 10 hours, so the performance was honestly excellent for a powerful gaming laptop.
But overall the results are very good for gaming laptops, especially affordable ones like the Dell G5 15 5590.
In the end, we can say that the Dell G5 15 5590 is one of the best laptops that you can buy, as it offers you a set of wonderful and amazing advantages, for example you will get a strong structure and a decent screen, in addition to well-matched components and strong performance in the latest games, Alongside this, it supports the latest gaming features, including ray tracing.
One of the great advantages of the device is the battery life, as we tested it and found that it lasts for approximately 10 hours.
It is also very suitable for those who want a mobile device capable of playing games but either do not want to pay an absolute fortune.
