The Insta360 One R 1-inch camera is well suited for certain occasions, it is definitely not a GoPro, it can produce beautiful 4K (or 5K) video and excellent stills.
Insta360 is one of GoPro’s biggest competitors in action cameras, and the Insta360 One R has made a 1-inch gap that GoPro has left blank so far.
The Insta360 One R 1-inch camera has a large 1-inch sensor, just like the Sony RX0 II, but it beats it in several points as it has very good stability and a menu system that doesn’t look like it has been ported from a DSLR.
The Insta360 One R 1-Inch version outperforms the GoPro Hero 9 Black in terms of its low-light capability and native dynamic range better than any other action camera.
With a 1-inch sensor (about four times the light-gathering powers of competitors with 1 / 2.3-inch sensors), the 5.3K // 25p and 4K / 60p modes, the One R 1-Inch version produces sharp and powerful videos.
The Insta360 One R 1 inch features impressive stills, giving you shots higher than those of competitors, and also offers the option to pull off heaps of detail from the shadows without much of the noise generated.
But it is also not without flaws, as the 1-inch Insta360 One R is prone to producing some sheen and nuances in areas of high detail.
But if you are prepared to put up with those minor inconveniences and frustrations, the Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition camera produces some of the best videos and photos you can get from an action camera.
The Insta360 One R 1-inch comes at $ 549 / £ 519 / AU $ 870 and includes a battery and core processing unit, and you can also buy just a 1-inch ‘mod’ for $ 299.99 / £ 279.99 / $ 489.99.
- Very good image quality
- Better in low-light than GoPro
- Beautiful Raw Picks
- Modular flexibility

Insta360 One R 1-inch: Compact Design
The Insta360 One R 1-inch camera has a large lens, but it is the lens hood that makes it look bulky, and underneath is the lens glass, which is not much larger than the Insta360 One R’s 360-degree mode.
It comes in large size because the protective glass is behind the lens itself thanks to the wide-angle field of view and the gap between the lens glass and the lens hood.
The Insta360 One R’s 1-inch camera is slightly larger than the One R’s 4K, with a slight bump at its rear that extends a few millimeters outside the mass of the screen.
It has a battery, the part that contains the screen, the controls, the lens, and the sensor all in separate blocks, which keeps the battery clip keeping everything in place.
If you want to calculate the formal waterproofing for a distance of 5 meters, you will need to use the housing, but in general the case helps to keep all joints tight.
The screen is very small and square for a comfortable configuration. But it is much better than nothing.

Insta360 One R 1-inch Features: Good Stabilization with useful modes
The Insta360 One R has 1-inch stabilization called FlowState which is GoPro’s HyperSmooth equivalent.
You can use the wide field of view almost original and still see some motion shake, giving you a smoother result.
And the virtual “wide” view is really smooth even when dealing with the tough motion of jogging.
We liked the large sensor in the Insta360 One R 1-inch Edition camera, for example you can use the narrowest field of view in most action cameras and the image will often look very smooth. The 1-inch sensor also handles the crop much better than most, even without any detail more vivid than the original ultra-wide crop width.
For the Insta360 One R’s 1-inch low light camera, it’s much better than the GoPro video.
It’s brighter, cleaner and more detailed, but to be honest some high-end phones can still shoot better video, even with smaller sensors.
Insta360 One R has 1-inch two additional video modes, Timelapse and Timeshift.
Timeshift mode increases motion to 16x, for a “fast forward” effect, which lets you use it for a quick tour of landmarks while on vacation.
Unfortunately, however, the processing involved here occurs in the phone app or Insta360 Studio, and this is a little disappointing, as 4K clips that end in one minute take a long time to export, but in general the results are good.
We also noted that the nifty optional motion blur effect matches the image data from multiple frames in each frame in the final clip.
Timeshift also automatically edits for speed changes in footage based on the relative motion rate, and you can preview results directly on camera.

Insta360 One R 1-inch Other Features: Great Battery Life with Decent Sound
And to get the best results from the Insta360 One R 1-inch, you will need to import the files and then export them through the Insta360 or Insta360 Studio mobile app for Windows / MacOS.
It has a few common presets that allow for real in-camera stabilization, but the powerful laptop makes things better, but 4K time-lapse videos still take a lot of time to spit.
As for the battery life of the Insta360 One R 1-inch camera, the battery is a complete unit, except that the additional units are not very expensive.
The Insta360 One R also features a 1-inch stereo microphone array, using a one-hole microphone at the top of the console, the other on its side.
The sound is crystal clear and the Insta360 has a noise bed that is quite noticeable if you shoot in a quiet environment, but GoPros’ dynamic range is better as well, with more bass depth.

Insta360 One R 1-inch Performance: Video and image quality
As for the image quality of the Insta360 One R 1-inch camera, it is superior, and in general almost all semi-decent action cameras contain 1 / 2.3 inch sensors.
These sensors are about a quarter the size of a single inch chip, giving you four times the area of light gathering for the camera, better dynamic range with reduced light power and presenting the practical issues of a larger sensor chip and larger lens elements.
For example, when photographing in bright clouds with the width of the sun, you will still see similar small cut-off highlights, because you use similar exposures, but for areas that have shadows they will be brighter, clearer and more detailed in the 1 inch sensor image.
The Insta360 One R 1-inch has a 4K mod that’s less than a 1-inch resolution as well, 12 megapixels compared to 19 megapixels, and this means that you can shoot at speeds of up to 5.3k / 25p, or 4K at a rate of up to 60 frames per second, and the result is resolution and detail. Wonderful in bright sunlight.
But there are some points which is that the Insta360 One R 1-inch loses contrast and color fidelity visibly once you head under the tree cover, and most action camera shots are soft once the light level drops a little.
Fortunately, however, Insta360 processing will allow one frame to contain much more fine texture detail than the next, helping to reduce the noise whether the detail or noise is 30 times per second.
Overall, a GoPro has a stronger processing than the Insta360, but when using the camera’s standard JPEG processing, there are more coherent details at dusk. And picture quality takes another level when you capture DNGs, and instead use Lightoom or Photoshop for processing.
The Insta360 One R 1-inch camera is awesome, it has a 1-inch sensor and provides raw image capture support. It produces beautiful images if you take some time to handle image processing yourself, so it works for you if you want a wide (or just small) ) To help you produce short films.
The Insta360 One R 1-inch lets you use the same battery and brain for a smaller 4K and 360-degree unit.
But if you want the full effect of Insta360’s flowState smoothing, you need to import clips into an app on your phone or laptop and this takes a short life for longer clips.
The Insta360 One R has a 1-inch screen that is small and square for easy installation, and compared to DJI Osmo Action and GoPro Hero 9 Black it is very small.
