Fast Talk

Hades Canyon NUC is a partnership between Intel and AMD that we never expected, it is the smallest virtual reality capable computer.

Combining a quad-core Intel processor with a “discrete class” AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics in one chip, Intel Hades Canyon NUC easily excels in Full HD gaming with most recent titles and delivers breathtaking performance.

Intel Hades Canyon NUC also earns top marks for packing loads of performance into a small package, and it’s one of our favorite microcomputers of the year so far.

The Intel Hades Canyon NUC comes with a really high price tag, at $ 1,099.95 and comes with 256GB of 8GB of RAM, and is currently available on Amazon.

There is a model that costs $ 999, about £ 710, and comes with a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and roughly the equivalent Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics.

There’s also an entry-level Intel Hades Canyon NUC8i7HNK at $ 799, and it comes with a quad-core i7 CPU, and the integrated Radeon RX Vega M GL GPU has four compute units.

Intel Hades Canyon NUC is a go-to system, all you get out of the box is the Intel Core i7-8009G / AMD Radeon RX Vega M GH Hybrid, but you’ll have to save your own memory, storage and operating system.

Costs will vary depending on what you decide to put into your NUC, but the price of these parts combined with the review unit of $ 999 is up to around $ 1,400 for a fully configured system.

It comes in at just 8.7 x 5.6 x 1.5 inches, so it’s extremely small and noticeably larger than the Kangaroo Plus portable desktop (4.9 x 3.2 x 0.5 inches) as it’s a fraction of the size of a gaming console and won’t make much of an impact on your desk.

Intel Hades Canyon NUC design

All in all, the Intel Hades Canyon NUC has a modest design – until you turn it on, that’s it. Once switched on, NUC emits a very stunning skull-shaped glow from the top panel. Using the LED Manager app included with the device, you can easily customize both the skull and the eyes to glow any color you want, and you can also quickly adjust the lights to inhale and exhale or pulse.

In addition, it also modifies the colors of the PC’s headlights and sets them to match with specific things, for example you can set the power plug connection or the Ethernet cord.

If you also want to disable the LEDs completely

you can do that as well, and NUC’s RGB options are very powerful for a computer this size, and the skull relies on LED.

The Intel Hades Canyon NUC comes with a wide range of ports, and this is a very nice thing despite its small size, as the small computer features two USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C port, an SD card slot and a 3.5 mm audio jack on the front, in addition to a front HDMI port for setup VR easily.

Intel Hades Canyon NUC ports

On the back, there are about four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, two Ethernet ports, and an optical audio jack, in addition to two mini DisplayPort 1.2 ports, in addition to an HDMI port, which gives you plenty of options for connectivity.

Desktop-grade performance

The new big calling card for Intel Hades Canyon NUC is an 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with Radeon RX Vega M processor, which combines traditional Intel CPU with discrete AMD graphics.

This device aims to provide performance from the category of desktop games within a central processing unit the size of a mobile phone, and upon tests we made sure that it succeeds strongly in this regard.

Our NUC transformed performance similar to what you’ll get from an entry-level, and the gaming tower powered by the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti even handles a little VR.

The Intel Hades Canyon NUC ran the Hitman standard (1080p settings, max) at 59 frames per second, outperforming the compact Legion Y720 Cube desktop.

And when testing Legion in Grand Theft Auto V it connected (1080p, maximum settings), with both devices transforming into a highly playable 33 frames per second.

Intel Hades Canyon NUC can also handle virtual realitywith NUC scoring 4.6 out of 11 in the SteamVR performance test, with a “medium” score, which is pretty cool as well.

The Intel Core i7-8809G CPU has proven itself as capable of daily multitasking as it was for gaming.

Intel Hades Canyon NUC scored 17683 in the Geekbench 4.1 general performance test.

The 512GB Intel 545s SSD is also proven to be fast, copying approximately 5GB of files in 16 seconds, at a rate of 310MB per second.

The Intel Hades Canyon NUC is extremely well built, and it has a first configuration: $ 799, aimed at content creators.

The second option is $ 999 ready for virtual reality and is capable of overclocking, and both models have a Core i7 Kaby Lake G CPU, while the first features Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics.

Conclusion

Intel Hades Canyon NUC is one of the most impressive mini-computers we have tested so far, it has a performance capable of playing most modern games with ease, in addition to providing you with a lot of performance for everyday computing.

It also does not require the help of an external GPU, unlike the previous Skull Canyon NUC.

Intel Hades Canyon NUC is a truly advanced, single-chip, stand-alone desktop computing device, and is a turning point for thin and light laptops such as the HP Specter x360 15 and Dell XPS 15 2-in-1.

Although it is quite pricey, and a ton you will not find another small computer this powerful, as it has a wide variety of ports and support for advanced internal components that are equally amazing.
