5G speed – The fifth-generation 5G is the next generation of high-speed wireless internet. It exceeds the speed of a quarter generation 4G by at least 10 times, and it is faster than most people get from their connection and also wired broadband at home!
Although this may seem impressive, it is also difficult to understand what this really means for you when using your phone or downloading something at home on your computer.
How 5G is faster when it comes to normal tasks like downloading apps and streaming movies?
It’s easy to talk about how much of a fifth-generation change the world has,
like enabling enhanced VR and AR experiences, 3D phone calls connected smart cities, etc.
- What to demand for 5G speed standards
- In order to bear the fifth generation in mind, it must adhere to some rules set by the governing authorities like 3GPP. One of these specifications is the download speed.
Downloading occurs when receiving information sent from servers on the Internet (downloading applications, playing movies and music, etc.). Uploading is when information is sent to the server on the Internet (sharing photos via Facebook, uploading videos to YouTube, hosting your website, etc.).
- There is a minimum peak download rate and a minimum peak load rate which means that each station contains the fifth generation and essentially must support the speeds at least with this speed:
5GB download speed: 20Gbps (gigabyte per second), or 20,480MB / s (Mbps).
Maximum download speed 5 GB: 10 Gbit / s (gigabyte per second), or 10,240 MB / s
(megabyte per second)
Keep in mind that these speeds are identical, as they only use a different unit of measurement. Also remember that bits are not the same as bytes (the above measurements are written in bits).
Since there are eight bits per bit, to convert these 5G speeds to megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB), they should be divided by eight. There are many metrics in these units instead of megabits and gigabits, so it’s important to understand both.
- There are the same 5G speeds but in bytes instead of bits:
- 5 GB download speed: 2.5 GB / s (gigabytes per second), or 2,560 MB / s (megabytes per second).
Maximum download speed of 5 GB: 1.25 GB / s (gigabytes per second), or 1280 MB / s (megabytes per second)
The fifth-generation also has a minimum latency requirement. Transition time refers to the time interval between the cellular tower sending data and when the destination device (such as your phone) receives data.
- 5G requires a minimum time of just 4 milliseconds assuming ideal conditions are met, but it may drop to a minimum of 1 millisecond for some form of communication, especially URLLC.
Actual 5G network speeds
The above measurements are a reflection of the 5G speeds in ideal conditions without any delay or interference, and only if your device is the only one that uses this 5G cell.
Each 5G cell supports at least one million devices per square kilometer. The download and upload speed is divided equally between each device on the same cell.
In other words, mobile users may not experience maximum download / upload speeds. However, these speeds can be obtained if you are using a dedicated Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) system as you do not have to split the bandwidth with other users.
That being said, how fast is 5G, really? What internet speeds do you expect?
Unfortunately, the answer is not very clear. Actual 5G speeds depend not only on where you are when you access the network but also other factors such as the devices you use, the speeds the network is capable of, the number of other users who share 20 Gbit / s, and what kind of interference you play between you and the cell that provides 5G.
Verizon is one of the first companies to release 5G in the U.S., so we can look at data from its actual customers to see how fast 5G is right now, with current technology. Looking at these numbers specifically, we can see that a Verizon 5G Home user with FWA can access anywhere from 300MB / s to 1Gbit / s. Verizon 5G broadband service not only guarantees these speeds, users also report the same.
Beyond the statistics that we can collect today with live 5G networks, are speculation from carriers. For example, T-Mobile says 450MB / s is the average speed a user can expect when its network is up and running this year. T-Mobile also states that some 5G users may get speeds of up to 4Gbps by 2024 and we are still waiting in the Arab world, specifically Saudi Arabia, for that.
What is the speed of 5G wireless networks for you
As we mentioned above, without examples, it can be difficult to visualize what you can do on 5G vs. 4G, or any slower connection.
Keep this in mind: You can download a 3 GB movie, using 5G, 4G, 4G LTE, and 3G networks. Here is the time it takes to download the movie to these different types of mobile networks (using real speeds, not peak speeds):
35 = 1 hour and 8 minutes.
4G = forty minutes.
4G LTE = twenty seven minutes.
5G = five or thirty seconds
